Pop Culture & Trends in Today’s Italy

In the United States, it is much more common to see people out in hoodies, gym shorts, pajama pants or full athleisure outfits just to run errands or grab food. In Rome, even for something as simple as getting a coffee or meeting a friend, people look like they actually planned their outfits. It is completely normal to see someone dressed like they are going to a nice dinner, even though they are just heading to class or walking through the city. Being around that every day has made me more aware of how appearance connects to confidence, self-respect and self-expression in Italian culture.

Social media also plays a big role in shaping trends. TikTok and Instagram are huge in Italy, just like in the United States. I’ve noticed many Italian Gen Z users mix English words into their posts and slang, which shows how plugged-in they are to global culture. At the same time, there are specific Italian phrases, jokes, and cultural references that make their content feel very local and unique. Even though the platforms are the same, the style and humor still feel distinctly Italian.

What has stood out to me the most is that young Italians care deeply about bigger social issues as well. I’ve seen posters, protests, conversations and social media posts focused on climate change, sustainability, politics and human rights. Fashion companies promote eco-friendly materials, people carry reusable bags and there is a lot of discussion about the country's future and what needs to change. Living here has made me realize that pop culture is not just about trends or entertainment. It is also a way for people to express who they are, what they value and what they believe in.
