This was another dish that I was hesitant to try, but actually really enjoyed the taste of. The last savory dish that I’ve tried is fish balls, a popular street food made of fish paste and typically served with a hot broth.
My final stop (and sometimes my first stop when I’m craving a sweet treat) when I’m at the local night market is dessert. Taiwan does sweets better than almost any other country that I’ve been to, and I take advantage of this regularly. My favorite night market sweets are bubble tea, douhua (sweet tofu pudding with soy milk and toppings) and shaved ice.
My general approach to food in Taiwan is that I want to try everything here at least once and that I will not refuse a gift that is offered to me! Fortunately, I'm not a picky eater, and I'm also not easily grossed out, so this goal hasn't been too difficult for me to achieve so far. I was most apprehensive about trying intestines, blood and stinky tofu (the smell is truly worse than you can imagine). However, I have learned to conquer my fears and have since tried all three, gaining a little bit of respect from my local friends and co-workers in the process. And I actually enjoyed all three foods! Though still very new to me, trying these foods has pushed me to continue being open-minded and intrigued by food here instead of being apprehensive or scared to try new things. Through the process of trying new foods, I’ve also discovered some of my new favorite dishes of all time, such as douhua (tofu pudding), which I’ve eaten four times just this week.
