Community Development through Archaeology

Introduction:

Sometimes we think being connected to the world means traveling far away or doing something extraordinary. But often, connection begins much closer to home — by noticing the people, history and opportunities that already exist around us. Communities everywhere are shaped by the individuals who choose to invest their time, energy and ideas into making them stronger. Through my experience living and working in North Macedonia, I have learned that meaningful change often starts not with big projects, but with small decisions to show up, pay attention and care about the place you are.

What community need did I learn about?:

I first became aware of this community need through a visit to the archaeological site of Stobi, located just 15 minutes from my home. Although I had heard about the site, I did not fully understand its significance until I visited with a friend and saw firsthand both its historical importance and its potential as a community asset. Through conversations with staff and time spent at the site, I began to better understand the ongoing need for cultural heritage preservation and conservation capacity, including strengthening partnerships, increasing community awareness and supporting long-term sustainability efforts.
