






Because much of the economy is driven by agriculture, it is common for families to choose farming or fishing over education, especially when it might be too expensive to send their children to the city to learn.
Finally, when hanging out with my Khmer friends in Siem Reap, our favorite activities are very similar to what I would do normally in the U.S. We enjoy going out to eat, going to the movies (only $2 per show!), singing karaoke and cooking together. The movie theaters in town show a variety of films including all of the major Hollywood blockbusters (I just watched Star Wars and Frozen 2 last week), as well as Khmer films, Animes, and Thai romantic comedies. All Asian films have English subtitles, and all English films have Khmer subtitles, so everyone can enjoy them together!
