Getting around in the suburbs

Introduction:

In the city, people mainly travel by metro because there is too much traffic. Destinations in the suburbs are more spread apart, so people have to travel further to get to places. Also, the metro does not extend into the suburbs, so people in the suburbs have to rely on other forms of transportation.

How do people get around?:

There are four main ways people get around in the suburbs:

1. Cars - Most well off families own a car so they can drive around to buy groceries and send their children to school.

2. Buses - If they don't own a car, families take the bus to get around town. There are many bus lines, so you can get anywhere by bus!

3. E-bikes - University students often buy e-bikes for 3000-4000 yuan ($430-570) and ride around campus. Some of my friends even ride their bikes into the city, a journey that takes 30 minutes using this form of transportation (compared to one hour by bus). But e-bikes are not fun to ride in the rain because there is no overhead shelter!

4. Shared bikes  - Lots of students pick up a bike to ride to class in the mornings, to buy food, or just to visit friends. The suburbs are very bike friendly!
