Trash Collection in the Suburbs

Introduction:

On my one hour ride to work today, I spotted 15 street sweepers at work! They are the neighborhood heroes, helping to keep rubbish and leaves off the sidewalk.

What community need did I learn about?:

Dirty streets are an issue for two main reasons:

1) No one likes to walk around in filth. Dirty streets are smelly, and people could easily trip and fall because they stepped on a banana peel, for example.

2) Dirty streets are bad for people's health. There are lots of germs and bacteria in smelly trash piles, and it's important to keep clean! Why else do we wash our hands after using the bathroom and before eating?

Why does the community have this need?:

How do streets get dirty? Well, there are two main reasons:

1. People litter and throw food onto the streets. If left alone, this leftover food rots and make the streets smell. In China, it is common to see the locals litter or spit on the streets.

2. In the fall and winter, leaves from the trees start of fall, requiring some major cleaning up, too.

Is this need being met? How?:

Street sweepers come to the rescue! They are responsible for cleaning the streets, and taking out the trash from waste bins.
