This week I had an opportunity to interview Samuel, a bright 13-year-old who participates in my English conversation club for advanced speakers. We discussed his lifestyle, school and interests, entirely in English, which is impressive for a kid who has never left Colombia. Samuel's parents wanted him to learn English, so they enrolled him in an academy, and he takes private classes. I am always amazed when he can hold his own in my conversation club, where he is by far the youngest participant, undaunted by the complex topics we discuss. The following are his responses, unedited by me. I hope this interview shows that there are many similarities between you and kids living in Colombia, despite different cultures and languages.
For breakfast, I normally eat sunny side eggs or scrambled eggs with toasted bread or fried plantain. To drink, agua de panela. For lunch I usually have beef, chicken or pork with rice and potatoes. For dinner, I sometimes have the leftovers of lunch or sunny side eggs with rice.
