I enjoy being a Peace Corps Volunteer because I share my love for languages with others and empower them to learn English. Although we are living far from the United States, locals in my small corner of Colombia want to learn English for a number of reasons, including to seek economic, academic, cultural and travel opportunities. Some of my older adult students who have no intention of traveling simply recognize the socioemotional and physical benefits of learning a second language. It keeps them sharp!
Right now, Spanish class might seem like just another obstacle before graduating, just another box to check. However, I encourage you to lean into it and see how far you can take it because it could mean an unforgettable trip, a lifelong friend, an exciting job, a favorite song or even a new place you call home.
