Hello, Ms. Garcia’s and Ms. Henriquez’s 7th and 5th grade class!

Thanks for joining me on the last three months of my Fulbright Colombia experience. I’m excited to work with you all and delve into the unique characteristics of what makes this South American country special. And I will try to answer any burning questions you may have!

To get to know me a little more, I am writing you this mini-autobiography. While I typically say I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, I was actually raised in a suburb of Houston called Humble (pronounced without the “h” sound) which is approximately 45 minutes from the downtown area.

My childhood and adolescence likely looked a little different than yours. For reference, I grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s. The hit songs I would hum and sing with my fifth grade friends in the lunch line were songs like Avril Levine’s “Sk8r Boi” and “Complicated.”

Cell phones and iPods (this gadget that people used to listen to music on) did not become “a thing” until I reached seventh grade, which is when I received my first pre-paid Nokia brick phone at 12 years old. Hilary Duff was the “it girl” and when my parents subscribed to cable television, I loved watching Lizzie McGuire on The Disney Channel.
