Bird's the Word

If you visit Central Park, you may be able to find the common coot's cousin, the American coot. They look very similar.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Coots are omnivores, which means that they eat both plants and animals. Coots might eat algae, seeds, leaves, fruits, bugs or other bird eggs. Coots use materials from their environment to build nests, where they lay their eggs. A coot nest is usually made of sticks, leaves or grasses.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Foxes and raccoons eat coots sometimes, but we are not worried about the coot. There are many coots that live around the world. Despite their large populations, we should still do our part to make sure coots have clean and healthy homes. How can we help the coots? We can always throw away our trash when we visit a park.

What other ideas can you think about to help keep nature clean?
