Herzlich Wilkommen in Deutschland!

A big "Hallo" (Hello) from Germany! I am currently writing from Dresden, Germany and am excited to introduce you to this fascinating country. But first, I’d like to give you a better idea of where Dresden is in Germany, and tell you a little bit more about myself. Let’s get started!

Dresden is a city in the Bundesland of Saxony. Bundesland ("boon-des-lahnd") is what Germans call the different states in their country. We have 50 states in the U.S., but in Germany there are only sixteen Bundesländer. Saxony, where Dresden is located, is in the eastern part of Germany and is bordered by Poland and the Czech Republic to the east.

The Elbe River divides the city of Dresden into two parts. I am living in the northern section of Dresden, which is called Neustadt (“Noi-stah-dt”), which literally translates to “New Town.” Although I am living in Dresden, I am working as an English Teaching Assistant at a school in the nearby town of Pirna, which is about 30 minutes south of Dresden by S-Bahn (the commuter train). The school is called Friedrich Schiller Gymnasium. In Germany, a Gymnasium is a type of combined middle school and high school (grades 5-12) that prepares students to attend college.
