Adjusting to Humidity

While some people may not find humidity to be as pleasant as others, the humid air makes Zhuhai a seasonably suitable environment to live in.

Along with humidity, the frequent rain in this tropical region supports local agriculture and plants. Additionally, the coast that surrounds Zhuhai provides an assortment of seafood to be sold in local markets. Lastly, the surrounding mountains and water not only improve the air quality, but also keep it from getting too hot.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

When I arrived in Zhuhai, I was told that it gets so humid that the walls sweat. Although it is not yet summer, I have seen a bit of sweat on the walls resulting from humidity. I have also seen air bubbles form inside many food wrappers and cans. While air bubbles forming due to humidity are typically harmless, black mold has formed inside of my water bottles. After I noticed the black mold the first time, I now strive to ensure that my water bottles stay clean!

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

While the rainfall helps agriculture thrive in Zhuhai, the heat creates a hard environment for farmers to work in. Even in the heat, the farmers continue to complete their duties to support their crops. Along with the farmers, it is common to see landscapers and construction workers completing their duties in the heat of the day. The outdoor workers adjust to the heat by wearing hats and light clothing. Furthermore, locals have adapted to living and farming within the mountains.

Although classes are indoors, the excessive humidity creates a muggy environment on my university’s campus.
