Family Life in Henan

Introduction:

Each day in China, I gain new perspectives on life in China from my roommate and fellow Chinese students. However, staying with my former Chinese teacher and her family in Northern China provided me with a perspective on Chinese family life. Not only was Teacher Zhao's family close-knit, but they were all willing to help me learn Chinese and anything I wanted to know about China.

What is your full name?:

赵老师 (Teacher Zhao). Even if time has passed, it is respectful and proper for students to say "teacher" before a teacher's last name.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

I live in Zhengzhou, which is the capital of the Henan province in China. My husband, daughter and I live in a three-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment that has many floors. We live on the campus of the university where I teach.

What is your family like?:

My family growing up included my two parents and one brother. Today, my family includes my husband and my daughter. I always wanted to have a little girl. When I was teaching in the United States, my husband stayed in China for work. Therefore, I took care of my daughter full-time in the United States, which included helping her get ready for school, with homework, and whatever else she needed.
