Charity Shops for Change

Introduction:

Have you ever shopped at a thrift store? Thrift stores sell second-hand donations, such as used clothes, books, DVDs and more. Charity shops are just like thrift stores, except for one key difference. The main difference between a regular thrift store and a charity shop is that charity shops always use their profits to support a particular charity.

With about 1,000 charity shops in Scotland alone, it’s impossible to walk around Edinburgh without seeing one. Join me as I learn more about the big impact of these little shops!

What community need did I learn about?:

I love thrift shopping, but back home, there are only a couple of options near my house. When I came to Edinburgh, I was shocked by all of the choices! Many streets in Edinburgh are known for their charity shops, and one of them is only a two-minute walk from my classes. Like thrift stores, charity shops have great selections for bargain shoppers, but even more importantly, charity shops use the money they raise to support a good cause.

Why does the community have this need?:

Charity shops help people and animals in need, while also providing affordable clothing options. Every charity shop raises money for a “parent charity,” which is a larger charity organization that uses the money for a specific cause.
