Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week, I traveled to two new towns for a total of about 400 kilometers, or about 250 miles. On Saturday, we went to Salvaterra de Magos, which is located northeast of Lisbon in the Ribatejo region. On Sunday, we went to Evora, which is southeast of Lisbon, and in the Alentejo region.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

When I first arrived in Portugal in October, I traveled from Boston to Lisbon, which is 5,128 kilometers or 2,186 miles. I have also traveled to Barcelona, Spain and Brussels, Belgium in the past six months.

How did I get around this week?:

This week, I took a bus, train and car! During the week, I use the Metro to get from my house into the city, and then I walk around to wherever I need to go. On the weekend, we took a car to get to Salvaterra and a bus to get to Evora.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place that I visited this week was a "typical house" in Salvaterra, a type of small house built on the banks of the Tagus river. An old Portuguese woman explained how she and her five sisters slept in one room of the house, while her three brothers slept in the other bedroom. The attic was used to keep the fishing gear, and there was a little kitchen, too. Her parents would sleep on the riverboat!
