Survival in the Swiss Alps!

Introduction:

For nearly 60,000 years, the Swiss Alps have been inhabited by a population of people whether it be during the Paleolithic time or modern day. What makes their lives interesting is their choice of location. Life in the mountains is beautiful, but it can also be very difficult especially due to the unique climate!

What makes this environment special or different?:

The Swiss Alps are very high in elevation. This means that the air is thinner and harder to breathe, the temperature is colder and the winters are very harsh!

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The water in the Swiss Alps is amazingly clean! Because the rivers are filled with old glacier water and run-off from the melting snow, there is always a supply of fresh clean water!

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Because the ground is mostly hard rock, it can be difficult for certain crops to grow and to raise common farm animals. Also, having steep slopes makes it difficult to travel and build homes and businesses in the area.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

People have been adapting to the mountainous region in many ways!
