A Malaysian Wedding

Introduction:

Malaysian weddings are so much fun! First, the groom goes to the house of the bride's family. Then, after possibly traveling hundreds of miles, the groom returns to his home with the bride and her relatives.

What tradition did I learn about?:

You can expect a typical Malaysian wedding to have up to 1,000 guests! Invitations are spread far and wide, and no one is turned down at the door.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This traditional celebration is for marriages between Malay people. Since couples usually marry in a private ceremony, a "wedding" is more of a reception that allows people to celebrate with their families. Oftentimes, you end up seeing people you haven't seen in years.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

No, this tradition is not really connected to the environment. However, people are being more environmentally conscious at weddings by encouraging the use of reusable containers and utensils.
