Where No One Drives a Car

Introduction:

In a city that is so crowded, it is often easy to find yourself stuck in traffic if you take a car. I have found that it can take up to 30 minutes to go just one or two miles! Instead of driving cars, most civilians rely on other modes of transportation to get to where they need to go.

How do people get around?:

There is a system of trains called the MRT, which is like BART in San Francisco or a the MTA Subway in NYC, except the trains are above ground and you can look out over all of Singapore when you’re riding them! The locals mainly take MRT trains, so you can see people from all walks of life on your ride. The trains are extremely fast and get you where you need to go in great time. To ride the MRT, you need to buy an MRT card and add money, or “top up,” as they say in Singapore. Each trip costs about one U.S. dollar, so it is both cheap and convenient.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first I was scared to take the MRT because I thought I would get lost between all the different stops. However, I soon discovered that it is much easier than I originally thought. The trains announce each stop in clear English and have signs with directions.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

The MRT is extremely connected to Singapore’s local culture.
