Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

Pichidangui and Valparaíso are both near the coast. Pichidangui is 198 km (123 miles) from Santiago, and Valpo is 115 km (71.5 miles). That's 626 km (389 miles) total this week.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

With all my travel this week, my total journey is now over 20,240 km (19,614 km from before + 626 km this week) or 12,577 miles.

How did I get around this week?:

I took coach buses from a bus terminal in the city to Pichidangui and to Valpo. Valpo has its own real bus terminal, but to catch the bus back from Pichidangui, my friend and I just stood on the side of the highway and waved to the first big bus we saw that was going to Santiago. The bus pulled over, we paid them our bus fare (5.000 pesos each) in cash, and they told us to take any free seats we could find. It was very easy and much more casual than I would expect from an official bus company in the United States.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

Valparaíso is a beautiful city, and one of my favorite places I've visited in Chile so far. The entire city is full of art, from the paintings covering the walls to the creative signs of the hostels, restaurants, and art galleries.
