Since leaving England last week, I have traveled about 1100 kilometers, which is about 680 miles. This includes my flight from London to Frankfurt, as well as two trips to Frankfurt Airport from Mainz.
Since this is the beginning of my journey, I have only traveled 680 miles total.
Nearly every city and town in Germany is connected by railways. From my apartment, I can take a tram to the Mainz central station. From the central station, there are many options for railway travel. There's the S-Bahn, a small regional train, the RegioBahn, a larger commuter train, or the ICE, a high-speed, long-distance train. I have been doing a lot of tram and S-Bahn travel this week!
The most interesting place I visited was the Mainzer Dom, otherwise known as St. Martin's Cathedral. It is over 1,000 years old, and is the tallest building in Mainz. The local government even passed a law making it illegal for any building in Mainz to be taller than the Cathedral's west tower!
