What was the best meal this week?:

Okinawan food, which uses more Southeast Asian fruits and spices and more meat like pork than places in more northern Japan.

What music did I listen to this week?:

I started listening to Japanese songs. My favorite now is ひこうき雲 hikoki gumo (he-koh-o-kee-gu-moh), which roughly translates to "smoke trails left by airplanes." Hikoki means airplane, and gumo means smoke. The song is actually more than 40 years old but was recently used in the animated movie "The Wind Rises" by the famous director Hiyao Miyazaki. I'm trying to memorize it to sing it in karaoke, which is a very popular activity in Japan. Listening to Japanese songs is a great way to learn and practice the language.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

Spending New Year's Eve with locals. I also loved traveling from Beppu in the south of Japan all the way up to Tokyo in the middle of Japan by train. I was able to see much of the countryside, seaside and big cities.
