Navigating China's Transit

One more thing to note is that the fastest magnetic levitation train in the world is in China to transport passengers from Pudong airport to Shanghai’s city center in about 7-8 min compared to other means of transport that could take 45 minutes - 1 hour to go the same distance.

Metro - Another impressive technological feat is the Chinese metro system that has more than 16 lines in operation across Shanghai! Once you descend into the station, you can purchase or load a metro card with RMB at any ticket machines. Next comes a bag check to ensure safety and then you scan your card to enter the actual train platform. Usually, it's not too difficult to get onto the train, but if it is rush hour, you may need to squeeze on with the crowd!

How do people get around?:

As you have read above, people have several options to get around within China's big cities, but I would say that bikes and the metro are most popular in Shanghai.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

This may have been obvious, but my favorite transit options are the ride-sharing bikes and the metro. Both are convenient and affordable for someone who doesn’t want to purchase a motorbike. Also, these two modes of transport are quite easy to figure out. Since I am having issues dowloading and using the Didi app, I can take a cab if I am in a bind or once the metro stops running at 11pm. I was quite comfortable on the busses/coaches and high-speed trains when we were traveling on a long-distance trip out of Shanghai.
