Recognizing Perspectives

Another thing about Germans is that they love to discuss politics. It generally does not devolve into a shouting match as could be expected. Many Americans find it uncomfortable at first if they are not prepared for German frankness. A lot of them are extremely blunt and honest people. Germans say it how it is, no matter how raw or unsettling that truth is. Americans tend to be much more sensitive and considerate in their word choice; however, Germans mean no harm by it. This can lead to difficult discussions on cultural sensitivity. Germans are known for many things, sensitivity or political correctness are not one of those.

Germans are also extremely good hosts! If you are invited over for dinner, expect to stay for many hours and leaved stuffed. German hospitality says the guest is king. Your host will try to cater to your every whim. Let it happen so you don't risk offending them. It is polite to bring flowers chocolate or wine to a dinner party, but it is not required. I was invited to a coworker‘s house for dinner this past weekend. Not only was I full when I left, I felt like my every care in the world had been tended to. I had coffee, tea and dessert in addition to the meal.
