Getting Around Leticia

Introduction:

Leticia is a small city, so it isn't hard to get around. While there are cars, taxis, and buses, most people don't use those.

How do people get around?:

Many people in the city own motos, which we know in the US as motorcycles or mo-peds. This is the most popular form of transportation. Lots of people, especially children and students, use bikes, which are more economical. There are also tuktuks and moto-taxis which you can pay a dollar or less to take you anywhere in the city. Some people walk as well, depending on their destination. If people are traveling on the river, they use boats and canoes.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was nervous to ride my bike, because there are no sidewalks and the traffic here is kind of crazy. There are very few signs and there is only one traffic light in the city. Sometimes it can be scary, but I am always very careful and watch out for motos and cars. Now I am more used to it. In fact, I like how quick and easy it is to get around town.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Many people here can't afford cars, so this is how they live. Additionally, the roads aren't big enough to support cars. Since the town is so small, however, there isn't a need for large cars or trucks.
