Remembering the Past

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

It's a five to ten minute walk, so I usually walk with a friend from my block in the morning, and mom or dad picks me up from fritids in the afternoon. [*fritids is a Swedish term that refers to afterschool care!]

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I basically only eat in the cafeteria since it's free and I have to eat there. I like the hamburgers that they sometimes make.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

We speak Swedish, but we have just begun studying English. In Swedish, you can say "Hej" and "Hej hej" to greet each other. [*hej is pronounced just like "hay"]

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

A lot of kids are named Fredrik, Oskar, Gustaf, Anna, Linda, and Emma.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

We study Swedish, Math, English, Social Science, and P.E. My favorite is probably Social Science where we learn about the different parts of Sweden and Swedish history with the old school kings and the wars.

What is your homework like?:

We are assigned workbooks for each subject and each night we are told to do a number of pages in the books.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

I like to play tennis, hockey, football, and video games. I like all sports, but I like tennis the most!
