It's a Kid's Life

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

"I eat lunch in the school cafeteria with all of my friends. I have a lot of them, they really like me. My favorite food is chicken. I don’t get to eat it a lot but I love it. For lunch at school they make us banku, fufu, sometimes they make rice balls too.”

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

“At school the teachers make sure we only speak English, French, or Twi. Most of the kids speak English a lot so we can learn it better. So many people in Ghana speak Twi so we have to learn it as best we can. There are kids at my school who speak French and need help learning English and Twi. Hello in French is Bonjour, and in Twi it is Ete Sen?

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

“Everyone has different names at school. My best friend’s name is Catherine. A lot of boys are names Emmanuel. Some of my friends are Jannet, Idarra, Adjoa, and sometimes we call each other by our day names.”

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

"I study science, and math, and French, and English, and my favorite subject is Twi. It's so much fun to speak! I like that I can speak to other people in this language too because so many people speak it."

What is your homework like?:

“My teacher gives us all different types of homework. It depends what we are learning. My class gets a lot of paper with pictures and examples that show us how to do our work. For English sometimes I circle words with the short a sound or the long a sound. My math homework was counting up to 1000!”
