Before coming to the Netherlands, all I knew about the Dutch was that they were known to be tall, enjoyed cycling and had a very tolerant culture. When I got here, I had my initiation into Dutch culture when I unknowingly walked into the bike lane and got yelled at by a cyclist. I soon became comfortable on a bike, cycling home with my groceries every week. You have to buy plastic bags in grocery stores, so I also quickly learned to bring my own reusable bags. That was another thing that I had to learn the hard way.

During my first few weeks at work, I learned more about the culture of daily Dutch life and the workplace. Meetings are scheduled weeks in advance and everyone arrives on time. This promptness extends to the home. Dutch people don't just "stop by" each others' houses without notice! They have to schedule appointments to come over, even if they are family. I also learned how the Dutch celebrate birthdays - with cake, just like us! But, they say Gefeliciteerd!, which translates to "Congratulations!" instead of "Happy Birthday!"

I still haven't gotten used to the Dutch way of greeting people, which is giving them three kisses on their cheek. (Right, left, right, unless you want an unfortunate collision).
