In college, I studied a topic called International Development. I learned the differences between countries around the world. I analyzed levels of poverty; access to education, water and sanitation; opportunities to work; inequalities between people's income and gender; and the path toward sustainable development.

In Cambodia, I noticed a lot about the country's development. Cambodia is a poor country. The history of French colonialism in Cambodia has made it difficult for the country to develop. For a long time, resources and wealth went to the French. However, even after Cambodia became independent from the French, it was hard for the country to develop because of corrupt government leaders. Today, there are a lot of foreign countries assisting Cambodia. These nations are funding schools, roads, healthcare and security. Hopefully, Cambodian society will eventually be free from international support and be able to develop as a nation on its own.

One of Cambodia's largest sectors is garments. Take a look at your clothing -- are you wearing anything that was made in Cambodia? The garment industry creates jobs, but it is also known for exploiting Cambodian workers.
