The Painted Stork

Introduction:

These painted storks are large wading birds known for the pink feathers on their tails. They primarily live in wetlands and marshes and have adapted several features to fit their environment. Can you spot them in the photos?

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Painted storks have an orange head with long yellow beaks. Their feathers and wings are mostly a mix of black and white. However, they get their name from the light pink markings seemingly painted on their tail feathers. The birds have long pinkish legs to wade through the water.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I was biking through Keoladeo National Park when I saw this large flock of storks. I stopped my bike so I could observe these large majestic creatures! I was excited to see a bird species that can't be found in the U.S.

Where does it live?:

The painted stork can be found in wetlands and marshlands on the Indian sub-continent and parts of Southeast Asia. Wetlands are unique ecostems either seasonally or permanently covered in water. They are usually distinguished by the specific aquatic plants and soil types found there. These particular storks live in Keoladeo National Park, a park that includes man-made wetlands originally built to attract birds for hunting purposes.
