All About Me, Apolonia!

Location:
San José, Costa Rica
Journal Entry:

Hello. My name is Apolonia, or as my friends and family call me, Nia, Nebe or Apo. Here in Costa Rica, I have a family that I am living with, called my "host family." My host mom has also started calling me “Pollita” which means "little chick" in Spanish. I have been living with my host mom, Eli, and her grandson, Andony, here in Costa Rica for three months already. I feel like another member of the family!

My family back home in Kansas consists of my older sister, Sasha, my stepbrother, Jake, my stepsister, Jess, my mom and my stepdad. We also have three dogs: Dixie, Angus and Olive. Oliver is about to turn one year old in November. My dogs are definitely what I miss most about home. Don’t worry, my family isn't upset, they already know that! My boyfriend and best friend of many years, Jon, lives in Kansas as well. Jon goes to the University of Kansas with me and my sister.

My dad lives in Illinois, where I grew up, with my grandpa and a few more of my family members. They are part of the reason I am studying abroad. All of my family is from Mexico and speaks Spanish, but I never learned Spanish. Since I’m here in Costa Rica, I get to practice Spanish every day. I have already improved so much. I can’t wait to go back home and start having conversations with my family in Spanish!
