How far did I travel this week?:

This week, I spent four days hiking along an ancient pilgrimage route called Kumano Kodo. Every day I would hike as much as 10 miles, and then stay at a local ryokan, or inn, for the night. Getting to the beginning of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route took around 90 miles, the hike was probably around 40 miles, and it took another 100 or so miles to return. Then, I have been doing a lot of traveling within Kyoto city, which probably amounts to around 20 miles. So in total, I did around 250 miles of traveling this week.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

In terms of distance, I have probably traveled around 900 miles while in Japan. Most of the long distances were either on bullet trains, local trains or buses, but most of the travel within Kyoto city has been on a bike. In terms of time, I have completed three months here so far (September to December) and have seven more to go (January to July).

How did I get around this week?:

I used express trains (which are almost like bullet trains, but not quite as fast) to get from Kyoto to the start of the hike and to return to Kyoto after the hike. While in Kyoto, I have mainly been using the bus and my bike to get to different temples, shrines and events. While on the hike, I was obviously using my own two feet.
