Traveler Bio

Sveiki visiem! Hello everyone! My name is Sofia and I am teaching English in the port town of Ventspils through The Fulbright Program. Since I come from Kansas City, I have never lived by the ocean. I imagine it will be a lot different, but I will be learning lots of new things this next year.

This is not my first time living abroad, though. In high school I lived in Ogre, Latvia for a year as a student, learning the language and culture. One of my favorite things was joining a local choir, where I got to compete in the World Choir Games! We won a gold medal in the folk category!

In college I studied international studies and German in Galesburg, Illinois, so of course I had to live abroad. I worked in Munich, Germany as a translator from German into English. I really had to understand not only the language, but the culture in order to translate properly. Fun fact: my office building was located on an island in the Isar (the main river in Munich)!

And now I live in Latvia again! I will be working in the translation department at a local college teaching both English and American culture. (Do you sense a theme yet?) In order to be good global citizens, we have to understand each other's traditions and values. That is what I plan to do and I am so glad you will be joining me!
