Privet! Hello! My name is Quinn Carolan, and I am a student at Northern Illinois University studying politics, French and Russian language. Right now I am interning with the U.S. Department of State in the ancient capitol of Kievan Rus, better know as modern day Kiev, Ukraine!
My time in Kiev won't be my first time abroad. In 2017, I studied Russian language and politics through the American Insitute for Foreign Studies at the University of Peter the Great in beautiful St. Petersburg, Russia. After I left Russia, I was a Boren Scholar in Dakar, Senegal, where I practiced the French and Wolof languages and learned about West African art, culture and politics. I also made some great friends interning with the West African Network for Peacebuilding.
Finally, just before heading out for Ukraine, I spent my summer in Washington D.C., interning with Congressman Bill Foster and representing my school there. I hope to use the skills I learned there in the next few months!
So, come join me and read about my adventures as I work with the American embassy, return to Eastern Europe and discover the secrets of my new home and all it has to offer to an intern and Gilman Scholar.
