Traveler Bio

Hello! My name is MiKayla, and I am from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Growing up in southeastern Wisconsin, I have always been intrigued by new and exciting places. I stayed at home while I went to college at Mount Mary University. As a small, all-girls private university, I was one of two students in my class to graduate with a degree in chemistry. I also graduated with a degree in Spanish! I hope to go to medical school eventually, but I chose to take a break from school to accept a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Grant in Kyrgyzstan.

Having studied Spanish for 11 years and going abroad twice during my undergraduate studies (Dominican Republic and Costa Rica), I have a passion for learning about other cultures and languages. “Why go to Kyrgyzstan?” is a question I have been asked a lot in the past few months, especially considering a degree in Spanish it is not a logical choice given that the local languages are Russian and Kyrgyz. I have been fascinated by Central Asia since I did a project about Tajikistan, which borders Kyrgyzstan to the south, when I was in thrid grade. Additionally, I plan to take lessons in Russian and Kyrgyz while teaching in Kyrgyzstan.

I hope to be able to share all of my adventures with you, so that you too can come to love Central Asia as much as I do!
