Traveler Bio

Hello! My name is Melati and this school year I’ll be researching fish and fishing communities in the southeast corner of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island. I just finished graduate school in environmental management at the University of Rhode Island. I received a Fulbright grant to use the mapping skills I learned to study the distribution of coral fish in the region based on the catch that fishermen bring in.

Sulawesi is a very unique island with lots of strange and fascinating creatures including tarsiers (the world’s second smallest monkeys) and maleos (chicken-sized jungle birds that only lay their eggs in volcano sand)! Join me as we explore the animals, people and culture of Sulawesi and Indonesia!
