Transportation

Introduction:

This is a blog about different modes of transportation in Morocco.

How do people get around?:

There are different ways one can get around in Morocco, especially in the city of Rabat. My school is a 20-minute walk from my home-stay. However sometimes when I am late to school, I hail a blue petite taxi to make it on time. If I do not want to walk or take a taxi, I take the Rabat Tram that has a stop near my school. Rabat is a city near another city named Sale separated by a river. The Rabat Tram has a few stops that extend into Sale by land. However, I can take a 2.50 Dh ($0.25) boat ride to Sale without the wait time and additional stops on the Tram between Rabat and Sale.

During the weekend I like to travel between cities with my friends. Traveling to and from different cities is easy within Morocco because of the reliable train system. Each city within Morocco consistently has a petite taxi system which I use to get to and from places.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was terrified to use a petite taxi alone with my limited Arabic-speaking skills during my first month in Morocco. When I arrived in Morocco I did not know a single word in Arabic or French (many Moroccans speak both French and Arabic). My classes taught me about the available modes of transportation within Rabat and taught me how to ask to get from one place to another.
