My Autobiography

Journal Entry:

Hi everyone, my name is Starlyn! I am in Japan on a study abroad program. I am glad you are joining my journey through Reach the World!

Moving to Japan is the second time I have moved to a country completely unlike my own. I was born in the Dominican Republic. It is a small island in the Caribbean Sea. My family and I lived there until I was almost seven years old. That's when we made the jump to Philadelphia in the United States. I was so afraid!

In the Dominican Republic, we speak Spanish. I had to learn English to get to know people in Philadelphia. Even though it was scary, I learned pretty quickly.

I learned to love living in the United States because of what I call the "clash of cultures." What do you think I mean by that? Well, in the United States, you can find so many cultures so easily. There are so many people from different backgrounds! I felt accepted, just as soon as I learned enough English to talk to people.

Now, here I am on the other side of the world in Japan. I am trying to learn the language. I know I will able to do it. I am confident that I can make friends here, the same way I did when I moved to the United States.

Some days, it is super scary to think about being all the way over here. However, it's nothing I haven't done before!
