Africa is, without a doubt, home to some of the most delicious food on this earth. I have had the opportunity to see how four racially distinct families choose, prepare and serve their meals. Although these families were quite different, a common theme was the hospitality they showed their guest, especially around the dinner table! Let's find out more!
While in South Africa I spent a good chunk of my time with isiXhosa-speaking people (a language spoken by many people in the southern part of Aftica), and I enjoyed their umngqusho (or "samp & beans"). This dish is commonly eaten on the Eastern Cape, and it keeps you fuller longer because of the complex carbohydrates in the grains that make up a bulk of the meal. Another dish common among the Xhosa people is umphokoquo, or "African salad." It reminds me of grits! Even though I had the luxury of trying a few South new African dishes, most of the food I have eaten during my time abroad has been similar to American dishes.
