Sain baina uu! Hello, and greetings from Mongolia! My name is Monica, and I’m currently writing to you from Khovd, one of the western cities of Mongolia. I’m in the country teaching English for one year. I am also looking to learn about Mongolian culture and language. I’ve already been in Mongolia for four months, but I’m looking forward to learning more about this country alongside you all!

Mongolia is located in Asia between Russia and China, and has a pretty colorful history with both of its neighbors! However, unlike China, Mongolia has a small population – for a country that could stretch all the way from Oregon to Illinois, there are only three million people living here. Half of Mongolians live in the capital city of Ulaanbaater, and everyone else is very spread out around the country. In the town that I live in, Khovd, there are about 30,000 people. Many of the towns in Mongolia are new because most people were nomadic and lived in the countryside far from other people. However, Khovd has a long history as a Manchu military fortress from when Mongolia was part of China. Nowadays, only the ruins of some of the stones of the fortress are left. However, the city still has long rows of trees that line the main streets that were planted over 100 years ago!
