In 1996 I was born in Miami, Florida during my mother's first month of living in the United States. She was the last of her six siblings to leave the island of Jamaica to find new opportunities. I'm familiar with the tropical weather, Spanish-Caribbean cuisine and year-round sunshine my city is known for. My experience in Miami, however, was not all beachside bars and ball games. The strongest memories of my hometown center around the urban life I shared with a diverse community of immigrants and extended families who looked out for each other. This fostered my love of discovery while growing up: discovering what other families and cultures enjoyed in their homes, discovering new opportunities at school or church functions or discovering new scenes of the city with my friends on the block.
Thus, I took several opportunities to explore more as soon as I left Miami for Sarasota, Florida to attend university for the first time in 2014. This wasn't limited to exploring new spaces either, as I took the chance to explore new things as well as new places. I was a philosophy student, but I also launched myself into the local music scene as an MC and DJ performing with talented friends.
