Meet Mallika!

Location:
Ulaaanbaatar, Mongolia
Journal Entry:

Hello, or as they say in Mongolia, Sain baina uu! My name is Mallika and I am 23 years old. I am spending one year in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, to teach English and to learn about health and other issues in central Asia. I grew up in the small, peaceful New England state of New Hampshire with my mom, dad, little sister and three pet hermit crabs. My dad is an electrical engineer, my mom is a former French teacher, and my sister is a college student in Vermont. As a family, we enjoy spending time in New Hampshire’s beautiful mountains. New Hampshire gets cold in the winter, but it can’t compare to Ulaanbaatar, which is the coldest capital city in the world. New Hampshire and Ulaanbaatar have a 12 hour time difference, so I am truly on the other side of the world!

I went to a boarding school near Boston, Massachusetts for four years of high school, and after that, I attended college in Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore was an important city during the civil rights movement and is still a key site of social activism today. You may know Baltimore's rowhouses: a form of housing that is common throughout the city. I studied History and Public Health Studies, two subjects that allowed me to interact with the local community and to learn about the world around me.
