Lakes and Also Lakes

Our cohort went on an excursion to Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai Lakes, and Lake Kaindy. We hiked, swam in 4° C water, rode horses and had our minds blown by Kazakhstan's natural beauty.

The van on the way to Charyn Canyon
We took two vans. This is about half of the cohort while everyone was still awake
We took a bathroom/snack break and I took a picture in this yurt (Kazakhs were historically nomadic and lived in yurts)
An interesting van drove by along our hike through Charyn Canyon (sometimes referred to as "Baby Grand Canyon")
We spent some time at the river at the bottom of the canyon before hiking back up and continuing to Saty
We spent two nights at a "domika" (kind of like a bed and breakfast) in the small village, Saty
We were warned but were not prepared for the smells that emanated out of the hole-in-the-ground outhouse
Several of us rode horses up the mountain to Kolsai Lake
