Left is Right and Right is Left

Introduction:

Transportation in Mauritius is quite different from that in the United States. For starters, driving here is literally the complete opposite of everything I learned about driving back home. That's right:  we drive on the left side of the road here. Not only that, but the steering wheel is on the right side of the car! This is a very strange feeling, even as the passenger!

How do people get around?:

Mauritius is very over-populated. It has over 1.2 million residents but is a very small island. It doesn't have a large road system and most towns have one road leading into and out of them. This leads to some serious traffic jams when people are trying to get home after work!

For this reason, people use several methods of transportation. Many people, if not most, own motorbikes of some kind. Motorbikes are not generally slowed by traffic issues and are much easier to park. Parking can be very challenging for regular-sized cars as space is very limited and is often too tight or small for full-sized vehicles. Bikers also do not stay in their lanes as I expected. It is not uncommon to be driving down the road while getting passed on both sides of your car by motorbikes!

A lot of people also drive cars, but most opt for smaller, compact options.
