How We Travel

The cockpit is where the crew of Wanderlust spends the most time. It has seating all the way around. In the cockpit you can find the steering wheel, which is also called the helm. The helm is much bigger than a car's steering wheel.

There are no road signs in the middle of the ocean, so the person who is steering uses a big compass to tell which direction to go. The compass, the helm, and the radar screen are all mounted on a post in the cockpit. This post is called a binnacle.

The cockpit is covered by a big piece of fabric called a bimini. The bimini keeps the sun and the rain off of our heads. It makes the cockpit a nicer and more comfortable place to be.

In front of the cockpit is the companionway. The companionway is a hole in the deck with a ladder going down into the cabin.
