Last week, Ryan and I visited Delhi, the capital city of India. A young man named Shekhar gave me a personal tour of what it's like to live on the streets.
When Shekhar was 12, he ran away from home and lived in the Delhi train station. He is one of the thousands of street children in India.
Shekhar showed me how kids survive on the streets. We saw five-year old kids running down the train tracks. They were trying to find leftover food on the luxury trains. Often, kids end up in gangs or get forced into very bad jobs. Life is very hard for kids on the street.
At the end of my tour, Shekhar took me to the Salaam Baalak Trust Shelter. The Salaam Baalak Trust works to help kids get off the street. They helped Shekhar get off the streets when he was younger.
First, they try to get children to go back to their parents. If that doesn't work, they run several shelters and schools in the city. I got to talk with some boys about their lives on the streets and at the shelter.
