The family we met has been doing this for generations. We enjoy watching people make crafts, so we were glad to get a tour. Mozart was excited about the possibility of getting a chance to make a pot. When the wet clay spun through her fingers, she loved it! The tradition of pottery-making here dates back to Hittite times, between the 18th and 14th centuries BC!
We also enjoyed watching the family members paint and make designs on their pottery. Everything was drawn free-hand. They are very talented!
Why does the community have this tradition? In ancient times, people needed pots and dishes. Pottery was a great way to make pots and dishes! People could also sell them and trade them to others.
Is this tradition connected to its environment? How? Yes! The natural clay by the river made this a perfect place for pottery. Other areas did not have these conditions.
We loved looking at all the samples. We were grateful we met these generous people and learned some more about Cappadocian culture and this art form!
