We decided to start our search early in the morning.

"Wow, it is really hot here," said Mitch. "Why did the ancient Egyptians build their tombs way out in the desert?"

"There are a couple of reasons for why they built their tombs here," I replied. "This area used to be the capital of Egypt."

The ancient Egyptians built many temples around the capital. One of the most important temples in all of Egypt is here. It is called the Karnak Temple. They believed that the Sun God lived in the temple. The Pharoahs wanted to be buried by this important temple.

"If the temple is so important, why not just get buried in it?" asked Mitch.

The answer is pretty cool. The Nile River runs from the south to the north. The ancient Egyptians built the Karnak Temple on the east bank of the river.
