The Small But Strong Community of Tarmilat

Introduction:

Tarmilat is a small community that is 10 minutes away from my university. The community is made up of about 20 families. They live on government land, and because the land does not belong to them, they are not allowed to build permanent structures (like houses). So instead, they build their homes out of stones from the land and flattened tin sheets as a roof. The community is very poor. Women in the community make money by selling the beautiful rugs that they made.

What community need did I learn about?:

There are multiple community needs that I learned about during my visit to Tarmilat. One community need was that kids in the community do not have a ride to school. They have to walk a long way to get to school. Another community need was more money. Families in the community don't have enough money to pay for food, clothes, school supplies or transportation. A final need is electricity. The community does not have good electricity that helps them see at night, cook on a stove or charge phones.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community has these needs because they are poor and the government does not take care of them. Where they live, there are very few jobs. The jobs they have don't pay enough money for people to be able to afford the food, clothes, transportation and toiletries that they require.
