Recognizing Perspective

Everyone has a perspective. A perspective can be defined as the attitude toward something, or the way a person feels toward something.

While in Morocco, I've been trying to influence university students' perspectives around the issue of migrants and refugees. A migrant is someone who moves from one place to another. A migrant can move for work, school or better living conditions. A refugee is someone who has been forced out of their country to escape war, persecution or natural disaster. While in Morocco, I have taken the opportunity to serve migrants and refugees by teaching them English.

Migrants and refugees are typically spoken about differently in different parts of the world. News channels can speak about them positively or negatively. Whether you are on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter, each social media site has users that either support, don't support or are indifferent about migrant and refugee issues. University students are social media users and so they probably have heard a few opinions about migrants and refugees.

Why is it important to influence perspectives? Positive perspectives means that people are supportive, whereas negative perspectives means people are not. Migrants and refugees, since they are leaving their home country, need support in their new host community to be successful and meet their needs.
