Life along the Inca Trail

The Incas developed terraces in their architecture to keep their houses and buildings from tumbling over. The altitude is also very high. If you are not accustomed to the altitude, it can be difficult to breathe and to walk. The Incas and Peruvian people today use coca leaves to help with the increased elevation.. They will either chew the leaves or make an infusion with hot water.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Many people want to visit Machu Picchu since it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The people of Peru have to adjust to this change in environment and tourism. They have to protect Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. However, many men from the countryside have also found useful work in guiding tours and acting as porter (men who carry bags and supplies for hikers).

The people of Peru have adapted to this change since tourism can help their economy grow. If you are traveling to a different country, it is important to remain respectful of the environment. Some Peruvians worship the earth and the elements, so it is important to honor their beliefs and protect the environment.
